SA���ʴ�ý

In late April, a group of SA���ʴ�ý’s University students had the exciting opportunity to visit the Microsoft campus in Redmond, Washington. The trip, sponsored by the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), offered students a firsthand look into one of the world’s leading technology companies, guided by a familiar face—SA���ʴ�ý’s alumna Nargiza Yusupova.

Nargiza, a software engineer at Microsoft and a graduate of the University’s Microsoft Software and Systems Academy (MSSA) program, hosted the group at the Microsoft Visitors Center. As a standout former student of Dr. Radana Dvorak, professor of computer science, Nargiza continues to inspire through her career accomplishments and commitment to giving back.

During the visit, Nargiza shared her professional journey and provided students with valuable insights into the tech industry. She spoke about career opportunities at Microsoft, offered tips for interviewing, and emphasized the importance of being a self-starter and lifelong learner. She encouraged the group to always showcase what they have designed and developed, underscoring that continuous learning is key in the fast-evolving world of technology.

The students also received a guided tour from Jim, a member of the Microsoft team, who walked them through the company’s 50-year history—a milestone Microsoft is currently celebrating. The tour included an introduction to some of the latest AI applications being developed to create a more sustainable and equitable future.

Sustainability was another highlight of the day. The group learned about Microsoft’s ambitious environmental goals: to become carbon negative by 2030 and, by 2050, to remove all the carbon the company has emitted since its founding in 1975. As a token of the visit, students received notebooks and pens—all made from recyclable materials—demonstrating Microsoft’s commitment to eco-conscious innovation.

Students also enjoyed a visit to the Microsoft Company Store, capping off an engaging and educational experience.

Reflecting on the trip, Ben Gress, an information technology major who graduated in spring 2025, shared:

“I found the Microsoft field trip to be quite the enlightening experience! The opportunity to visit an active location where a modern tech company operates, and interact with people who understand its inner workings, was invaluable. Having insight on the hiring process and strategies to acquire a position at a company like Microsoft was very useful. It was also interesting to learn about Microsoft’s history, their current business model, and their outreach programs. Overall, it was a cool experience that assisted in professional development!”

For Dr. Dvorak, the trip was not only a meaningful learning experience for students but also a heartwarming reunion with one of her “star students.” SA���ʴ�ý’s University is proud to see its alumni leading in the tech world and giving back by mentoring the next generation of innovators.
